Royal Portrush Golf Club & Portrush Holiday Resort

The fortunes of Portrush holiday resort and Royal Portrush Golf Club are inevitably intertwined having been of mutual benefit to each other over the years, each one having enhanced the fame and popularity of the other.

Royal portrush hosted the first Irish Open Amateur Championship in 1892 and the Irish Professional Championship in 1907. In  July 2011 the course played host again to the North of Ireland Open Amateur Championship, the standard being so high that the cut came at 2.6.

In 1990 the competition was won by Darren Clarke, our new Open Champion and it seems but a short time ago that a young lad called Rory McIroy(the 2011 US Open Champion) carded a 61 over the famous links course.

More than 50 British and Irish national championships have been decided at Royal Portrush and in July 1896 it was the first Irish course to host the Open Championship won by Max Faulkner with a 4 round total of 285.

Formed in 1888 as The County Club, it became The Royal County Club in 1892 and The Royal Portrush Golf Club in 1895 having HRH The Prince Of Wales(later becoming King EdwardVII) as patron.

The course has been played by a host of famous golfers - Gary Player,Arnold Palmer,Jack Nicklaus,Tom Watson,Tom Kite,Ben Crenshaw,Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els to mention but a few, and of course by two of it's most famous members, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell. Padraig Harrington is also a member of the golf club and a regular visitor.
